"Let the Music Do the Talking" by Aerosmith - January 4th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

Does anyone else love Aerosmith's "Done With Mirrors" album as much as I do? It was one of their least commercially successful albums, had horrible production values, and spawned no hits....but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the songs on this album. They rock! Freshman year of college my best friend and I listened to this album A LOT while getting ready to go out. We loved it!

"Let the Music Do the Talking" was originally released by The Joe Perry Project (a side project during one of the bands spats) and then re-released on this Aerosmith album. They were at the height of their drug abuse (Tyler and Perry being known as the "Toxic Twins"). In 1986 a year after "Done with Mirrors" (in reference to being done with coke mirrors) was released, the band sent Steve Tyler to rehab in order for the band to survive.

Afterwards they experienced a rejuvination and released "Permanent Vacation" in 1987. That was the first tour I saw them on, and I was soooo very excited to finally have my chance to see them. Being from NH, and with Aerosmith getting their start in NH and moving on to Boston and worldwide rock-n-roll success - this was a big deal. I had older brothers & sisters who grew up in the 70's and saw them in concert during their drug years. At that time you never knew what to expect when you went to an Aerosmith concert...were you going to get a good show, or would Steven Tyler collapse on stage, forget the words to the song? That was commonplace back then. I remember working with guys who told me stories of Tyler being so wasted he collapsed like this and the whole show was called off. By the time I first saw them they were clean and on the rise again, spawning hits once again.

On this song, I especially love Tyler's sexy, playful way with words/lyrics: "I've got a hardcore mama, with a hot hoochie coo. Make my wheels start spinnin', like a formula two" and "Threw out my pipe, and my alkaline, I've gota squeaky clean body, and a dirty mind" "I'm a real fine dancer, I'll be cutting the rug. Got a brand new baby, she's my brand new drug". Although the video I posted is a little tough on the audio, I love it because it is was done in 1986 and this perfomrance is at Foxboro, Massachusetts right outside of Boston. The venue is the football stadium where the New England Patriots play. That's how big Aerosmith was...filling stadiums. I also love this video because it shows a lot of crowd shots of the fans, and how kids were back in '86.

Lyrics:

Rock-a-bye baby if you want to dance
Grab yourself a body and take a chance
They say one time around is all you get
But I'm still dancin' so you lost your bet

I got a hardcore mama with a hot hoochie coo
Make my wheels start spinnin' like a formula 2
I got one for the money
Two for the show
Three for my honey
And four to let you know that I

(CHORUS)
Let the music do the talking
Let the music do the talking
Let the music do the talking
Let the music do the talking

Cheese cake maybe if I take another bite
I'm a real fat city I'm an aero delight
Threw out my pipe and my alcoline
Got a squeaky clean body and a dirty mind
I'm a real fine dancer I'll be cutting rug
Got my brand new baby she's my brand new drug

I got one for the money
Two for the show
Three for my honey
And four to let you know that I

(CHORUS)

  1. I remember those lyrics. I haven't heard that record since it came out.
