that's an enduring christmas present. it would be hard to come up with an act whose records have stood up to time better than ac/dc's, and that one in particular. and what other major acts can you name that lost a lead singer as central to the bands appeal as bon scott and only got better? Pink Floyd lost Syd Barrett in like '68. that's the only example that comes to mind. don't even try to bring up van halen.
ReplyDeleteYou make two VERY good points about this band: Their ability to stand the test of time, and endure after the loss of their lead singer, which is a really big feat. My only gripe about AC/DC, though is that they never change. They give you more of the same...year after year, and their sound never evolves or changes. I am more intrigued when an artist explores new genres of music and tries something new. For example, PJ Harvey and Sinead O'Connor do this all the time, and I feel these people are real artists because of it. AC/DC never does this, but perhaps they are not trying to be "artistes". They just wanna rock!
ReplyDeleteThat being said, the bigger band you become, and the longer your band stays together, the more people you have to support (the band member's families, mansion mortgages, and car payments, ditto on the roadies and crew, etc.)so maybe you need to become more of a reliable franchise in that case.
