"Cruel Summer" by Bananarama - January 19th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

Check out this video: A girl band that messes with the cops!! In London!! And New York!!! In baggy pants!! (Baggy pants…or baggies… were all the rage back then, remember?) Initially I thought Bananarama was a band I was really going to get into. I loved their first hit “Cruel Summer” but turns out I never liked any of the other songs that they released such as their cover of Shocking Blue’s song “Venus”, “I Heard a Rumor” or “Robert Deniro’s Waiting”. One of the band member’s names was Siobhan. I never heard that name before, and I thought it was one of the coolest, most unique names I’d ever heard.

Bananarama were a girl band (and who didn’t love a good Girl Band back in the ‘80’s?!) from England made up of three friends, Siobhan Fahey, Keren Woodward, and Sara Dallin. Keren and Sara had been childhood friends, and met up with Siobhan while studying fashion journalism. They became fast friends because all 3 dressed radically and were into punk. They hung out at “in” London clubs like Taboo and the Wag Club and worked nights at The Marquee in the coat check room and such. They began jumping on stage at shows to do impromptu backing vocals for bands like The Monochrome Set, Iggy Pop, and The Jam, and were generally known around the London club and music scene.

Around 1981 Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols invited them to live in a dingy room above the rehearsal room he and former bandmate, Steve Jones were using. The guys helped them put out a demo. At the time Malcolm McLaren (famed manager of the Sex Pistols, Adam and the Ants, and Bow Wow Wow) was interested in managing them, but Bananarama passed, signed with a small label, and eventually signed with Decca records and had a long relationship with that label.
Famed English radio DJ (known for “breaking” all kinds of new bands), John Peel played one of their songs on the radio. Terry Hall from The Specials heard it, and he invited Bananarama to perform on his other band, Fun Boy 3’s, track “It Ain’t What You Do it’s the Way That You Do It. This really got them rolling.” (Later Fun Boy 3 played on Bananarama’s song “Really Saying Something”).

Bananarama’s first big hit, “Cruel Summer” broke in 1983. This song was even featured in the movie The Karate Kid.

By 1988 Siobhan had married Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, became disillusioned with Bananarama, and left to sing with the band Shakespeare’s Sister. Keren and Sara carried on with a new 3rd member and eventually became a duo – and believe it or not still record to this day.

Lyrics:

Hot summer streets
And the pavements are burning
I sit around
Trying to smile but
The air is so heavy and dry
Strange voices are saying
(What did they say)
Things I can't understand
It's too close for comfort
This heat has got
Right out of hand

It's a cruel, (cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, (it's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone

The city is crowded
My friends are away
And I'm on my own
It's too hot to handle
So I got to get up and go

It's a cruel, (cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, (it's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone

Gonna feel only it was

It's a cruel, (cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me), leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, (it's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone

It's a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Now you're gone

Gonna feel only it was

It's a cruel, (cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, (it's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone

Gonna feel only it was

It's a cruel, (cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me), leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, (it's a cruel), cruel summer
Now

"Hearts" by Marty Balin - January 18th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

I think this is one of the most heartbreaking songs. It's one of those songs I used to listen to in my room after a break-up and torture myself with. I had never ever seen the video until I started doing 80's Quest. I almost didn't want to post it, because it is just one of the worst, cheezy videos I have ever seen in my life, and I didn't want it to ruin the song for anyone. So my suggestion is: 1) Listen to the song alone first (don't look at the video). 2) Then look at the video later for shits and giggles.

I mean....c'mon!! How did this guy get to have a guitar with strings in his jail cell, in what I assume is supposed to be Alcatraz? Why does Marty Balin want us to see him in bikini swimsuits and underwear so much? First he's frolicking on a beach in bikini swim trunks with his woman. Marty grew up in San Francisco, not Europe...I really don't understand this. The water is also freezing in San Francisco! Then we get a second round of Marty in black binkini underwear right before some softcore cell action. Let's not leave out the cliche montage of "lovers in love" where he and his woman frolick on the beach, cross arms at the cafe to sip martini's, hug on a bridge in what nearly looks like a Sassoon jeans commercial, and run around together holding hands while wearing easter egg colored sweaters. Egads!!!

Yes, the video is unfortunate, but Marty Balin is one of the most interesting voices in psychedelic rock. He started out as a lithographer creating posters for bands' shows all around San Francisco in the 1960's and opening a rock club called Matrix. He started out in folk music, but then took it electric when he formed Jefferson Airplane with Paul Kantner. Marty sang with them from 1965 - 1971 including their gigs at the famed shows: the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, and at Altamont Speedway where he was famously knocked unconscious by a member of the Hells Angels who had been hired as "security" for the concert, but proceeded to beat upon and even kill one concertgoer. He left Jefferson Airplane and later reunited with them after the band changed their name to Jefferson Starship, and that's when I become really partial to Marty Balin's singing because some of my favorite songs by them feature him on vocals: "Count on Me", "Runaway", and "Miracles".

The song "Hearts" came off Balin's 1981 solo album. For awhile in the early 1990's he hooked up with Wayne Green an entrepreneur from NH (and I'm told...an odd dude) to record an album in Green's newly created recording studio in a barn in NH over near Keene/ Peterborough way. I don't know what became of all that, but I remember being surprised Marty Balin was involved in this.

Lyrics:

Is everything alright
I just called to say
How lost I feel without you
Miles away
I really can't believe I'm near
And how I still care about you

Hearts can break
And never mend together
Love can fade away
Hearts can cry
When love won't stay forever
Hearts can be that way

Is everything the same
Do you ever think of me
And how we loved one another
Will you change your mind
Will you want me back again
Or have you found yourself a new love

Hearts can break
And never mend together
Love can fade away
Hearts can cry
When love won't stay forever
Hearts can be that way

Is everything Ok
I just thought I'd write a song
To tell the world how I miss you
'Cos each and every day
I think of all the words I never said
And all the chances that I had to

Hearts can break
And never mend together
Love can fade away
Hearts can cry
When love won't stay forever
Hearts can be that way

Hearts can be that way
Hearts can be
Is everything alright

"Same Ole Love" by Anita Baker - January 17th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

A little R&B today! Ooooh-weeee, I absolutely loved Anita Baker's album "Rapture". I know, it wasn't tough, it wasn't alternative, it wasn't rocking, but I really dug her way with a song. They were beautiful, and had complex vocals, and were about longing and lost love. I used to play this album over and over and sing it in my college apartment (my neighbors probably despised me....because I certainly don't have her voice or capabilities, but belted 'em out anyways!).

Anita rollerskates in this video....how can you go wrong with that? It was the 80's after all!!! She also drives around her hometown of Detroit, although she doesn't seem to get out of the car very often... (unless she's in front of the church/fellowship hall). Hmmm....

Back in the 80's I went to see Anita Baker in concert outdoors on Boston Common. It was a balmy summer night, her voice filled the air and it was quite magical. Then right when she began singing my favorite song that I had been waiting for all night and hoping she was going to sing....a gigantic tree branch broke off from above from one of the trees in the park about 16 rows behind me and pinned a bunch of people underneath and they had to be taken away in an ambulance. That was pretty memorable....more so for them, I'm sure than myself!

Lyrics:

Flashbacks of the times we've had
Some made us laugh and some made us sad
We used to break up to make up
All the fun that came from those love games

Oh well, I think I need someone new
Oh, it just won't do, because I think about you baby

[Chorus]
From beginning to end 365 days of the year
I want your same ol' love
All I want to you is keep on loving you
I want your same ol' love

There's a reason I feel this way
All the things you do, well it might be the things that you say
Your love never changes
It's like a picture in a frame and it remains the same

Your undying love for me
Oh, it keeps me strong, keeps me holding on

[Chorus]

Slowly, love me
All is forsaken, I love the love we're making
Cause it's truly lovely
It'll never leave you, you'll know I need you baby

[Chorus: x2]

"Easy Lover" Philip Bailey with Phil Collins - January 16th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

Now this song is going to run through my head ALL day! That's the thing about this song...once you hear it you end up singing it all day long. Maybe it will happen to you too (insert evil laugh here: ha-ha-haaaaa!). This song came out in 1984. Philip Bailey was one of the singers in Earth Wind and Fire. He sang the high falsetto songs like "Reasons". Bailey put out a solo album. Phil Collins produced it and joined in on this song. At this time, at least where I lived, Phil Collins was the more popular artist, but I'm sure some would beg to differ. My older sister had joined the Army in the late 70's and was stationed down South and got into all kinds of R&B music. Earth Wind and Fire were her favorite band and they were big, big, big. Years and years and years later I went to go see EW&F with my sister. Philip Bailey looked so different (chubbier and with long dreads pulled into the high ponytail) I didn't even realize he was the same guy who sang "Easy Lover". So this is a real timepiece. Especially the Bill Cosby sweater and sweater vest that these two thought would be a great idea to wear for this video! This song rose to #2 on the Billboard charts.

Lyrics:

Easy lover
She'll get a hold on you believe it
Like no other
Before you know it you'll be on your knees
She's an easy lover
She'll take your heart but you won't feel it
She's like no other
And I'm just trying to make you see

She's the kind of girl you dream of
Dream of keeping hold of
You'd better forget it
You'll never get it
She will play around and leave you
Leave you and deceive you
Better forget it
Oh you'll regret it

No you'll never change her, so leave it, leave it
Get out quick cos seeing is believing
It's the only way
You'll ever know

Easy lover
She'll get a hold on you believe it
Like no other
Before you know it you'll be on your knees
She's an easy lover
She'll take your heart but you won't feel it
She's like no other
And I'm just trying to make you see

You're the one that wants to hold her
Hold her and control her
You'd better forget it
You'll never get it
For she'll say there's no other
Till she finds another
Better forget it
Oh you'll regret it

And don't try to change her, just leave it, leave it
You're not the only one, ooh seeing is believing
It's the only way
You'll ever know, oh

No don't try to change her, just leave it, leave it
You're not the only one, ooh seeing is believing
It's the only way
You'll ever know, oh

She's an easy lover (she's a easy lover)
She'll get a hold on you believe it (get a hold on you)
(She's) like no other
Before you know it you'll be on your knees (you'll be down on your knees)
She's an easy lover
She'll take your heart but you won't feel it (you won't feel it)
She's like no other
And I'm just trying to make you see (trying to make you see)

She's an easy lover
She'll get a hold on you believe it (get a hold on you)
And like no other
Before you know it you'll be on your knees (you'll be on your knees)
She's an easy lover
She'll take your heart but you won't feel it (you won't feel it)
She's like no other
And I'm just trying to make you see (trying to make you see)
She's an easy lover...

"Private Idaho" by The B-52's - January 15th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

Sorry so late with the post today! It's Sunday, and I am laaaaaazy. It was a really tough choice for the song/video today because there are so many great songs by The B-52's to pick from!! Then the next step is finding a video clip (if possible) from the 1980's. Most on youtube were from the 90's and 2000's. Then I found this little gem from Australian television from 1980....and "Private Idaho" it was!

This song was on their second album, Wild Planet (the red one) which came out in 1980 and was recorded in the Bahamas! It had so many great songs on it: "Party Out of Bounds" (which was one of my top 3 song choices, but couldn't find a good video), "Give Me Back My Man", "Quiche Lorraine" (also in my top 3) and "Strobe Light" (also in my top 3 - I especially loved dancing to this one!)

Believe it or not the song we all probably most associate with The
B-52's and the 80's- "Rock Lobster" actually came out in 1979 on their self-titled album (the yellow one - which also had "Planet Claire", "Dance This Mess Around", and "52 Girls"on it). During the 80's if you did not play this song at your dance...then, your dance sucked. If you did not play this song at your party...then, your party sucked. There was nothing like a room full of people dancing wildly until their clothes stuck to their bodies with sweat, and then the whole entire room falling down to the floor and lying down together while Fred Schneider sang, "Down, Down, Down..." and then everyone jumping up in unison when the music kicked in again. Group fun!!!!

I first learned about the B-52's from my friend Kathy who lived diagonally across the street. She went to Catholic Jr. High School - and I think they were listening to the B-52's and playing them at their dances before we were at public school. She had the yellow album, and I had the red one and we would carry them back and forth across the street and play them back to back at each other's house.

We played the B-52's all throughout my lifetime during the 80's: at Jr. High School dances, at high school dances, and then at frat parties in college. The B-52's got their start in a college town, Athens, Georgia and were named for the big beehive hairdos that the girls in the band wore which resembled the nose of a B-52 aircraft. I remember doing a project at school a photo-journalistic booklet made from colored paper and magazine photo cut-outs entitled "Looking Back on 1980". In the music section I had a giant photo of the B-52's and did a little write up on them as a new band ushering in an au courant brand of music called "New Wave". Something new was in the air, and we absolutely loved them! Still do! I used to dress up weird and go see them every summer at The Hampton Beach Club Casino. No matter how old you were it felt like everyone in attendance was 19 again at some basement party having a ball! The whole wood floor on the joint would be shakin'! Of course, the

B-52's had other albums (with great songs) in the 80's including "Whammy", "Mesopotamia", "Bouncing Off the Satellites" and 1989's "Cosmic Thing" which included their first song to crack the U.S. Top Ten at #3 - "Love Shack". Special shout out to my Bar-Barian buddy, Bruce who I know looooooves The B-52's.

Lyrics:

Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo
You're living in your own Private Idaho
Living in your own Private Idaho
Underground like a wild potato.
Don't go on the patio.
Beware of the pool,
Blue bottomless pool.
It leads you straight
Right through the gate
That opens on the pool.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
Keep off the path, beware the gate,
Watch out for signs that say "hidden driveways".
Don't let the chlorine in your eyes
Blind you to the awful surprise
That's waitin' for you at
The bottom of the bottomless blue blue blue pool.
You're livin in your own Private Idaho. Idaho.
You're out of control, the rivers that roll,
You fell into the water and down to Idaho.
Get out of that state,
Get out of that state you're in.
You better beware.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
Keep off the patio,
Keep off the path.
The lawn may be green
But you better not be seen
Walkin' through the gate that leads you down,
Down to a pool fraught with danger
Is a pool full of strangers.
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
Where do I go from here to a better state than this.
Well, don't be blind to the big surprise
Swimming round and round like the deadly hand
Of a radium clock, at the bottom, of the pool.
I-I-I-daho
I-I-I-daho
Woah oh oh woah oh oh woah oh oh
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
Get out of that state
Get out of that state
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
Livin in your own Private Idaho.

"Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley - January 14th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

Nothing edgy here....just a sharp dressed redhead singing about being a good guy - yet this was a popular song around 1987/1988 when Astley's English pop album, "Whenever You Need Somebody" came out. You heard a lot of Rick Astley back then. He had 5 hits off this album (This one, Whenever You Need Somebody, When I Fall in Love, Together Forever, She Wants to Dance With Me, and It Would Take a Strong , Strong Man).

I remember this being popular over the summer while we were at the beach, and I remember coming back to NH after a semester on exchange in San Diego...I was working at a bakery and sandwich delicatessen on campus called The Wildcatessen. This cassette was played a lot there and I made a ton of subs and pizzas while listening to this. It also makes me think of my friend, Michelle, because she really liked Rick Astley.

I went online to see what became of Rick Astley (He retired from music in 1993 at age 27 to have a family life) and learned about a recent popular phenomenon involving Rick Astley that I guess I missed altogether - Rickrolling. Here's what it is : Rickrolling is an Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up". The meme is a bait and switch; a person provides a hyperlink seemingly relevant to the topic at hand, but actually leads to Astley's video. The link can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true destination of the link without clicking. Persons led to the music video are said to have been rickrolled. Rickrolling has extended beyond web links to playing the video or song disruptively in other situations, including public places, like a surprise appearance of Astley himself in the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Lyrics:

We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy

I just want to tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand

[Chorus:]
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it

And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see

[Chorus x2]

(Ooh give you up)
(Ooh give you up)
(Ooh) Never gonna give, never gonna give (give you up)
(Ooh) Never gonna give, never gonna give (give you up)

We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it

I just want to tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand

[Chorus]

"Only Time Will Tell" by Asia - January 13th 80's Quest Song/Band of the day

I LOOOOVE this song by Asia! Always have, and always will. Asia was an English prog-rock supergroup formed in 1981 consisting of John Wetton from King Crimson, Geoff Downes of Yes and The Buggles, Steve Howe of Yes, and Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Isn't this video soooo 80's with the wall of televisions?!  I love it when the drums kick in near the beginning. And the lyrics that just get me to my core:

"I see it now.
Becomes so clear.
Your insincerity.
And me all starry eyed...You think that I would have known by now"

That part is just so beautiful! I was "feeling" those lines back when I was 15 years old and this song came out in 1982, and unfortunately, I am still "feeling" those lines at age 44 all these years later. I dunno why love has to be some damn hard, if everyone wants it!

Lyrics:

You're leaving now
It's in your eyes
There's no disguising it
It really comes as no surprise
To find that you planned it all along

I see it now
Becomes so clear
Your insincerity
And me all starry-eyed
You'd think that I would have known by now

[Chorus:]
Now, sure as the sun will cross the sky
This lie is over
Lost, like the tears that used to tide me over

(Only time will tell)
One thing is sure
That time will tell
(Only time will tell)
If you were wrong
The brightest ring around the moon
Will darken when I die

[Chorus]

You're leaving now
It's in your eyes
There's no disguising it
It really comes as no surprise
To find that you planned it all along

I see it now
Becomes so clear
Your insincerity
And me all starry-eyed
You'd think that I would have known by now

[Chorus]

(Only time will tell)
You're on your own
Inside your room
(Only time will tell)
You're claiming victory
You were just using me
And there is no one you can use now

(Only time will tell)
One thing is sure
That time will tell...
